Dewasanzan Retreat

Embark on a Spiritual Journey through Dewasanzan’s Three Sacred Peaks,

Connecting with the Past, Embracing the Present, and Awakening to the Future

in a Transformative Experience.

September 1st - 6th* / September 10th - 15th*, 2025

Join us on an immersive spiritual journey through the sacred peaks of Dewasanzan in Yamagata Prefecture, where the past, present, and future converge in a transformative experience. This retreat offers a unique opportunity to explore Japan’s ancient traditions while connecting deeply with nature and your own spiritual essence.

Our journey begins with Mt. Haguro, symbolizing the present. We will ascend its path lined with towering cedar trees, some over a thousand years old, and visit the ancient pagoda—a national treasure. This is where we focus on grounding ourselves, embracing the here and now, and cultivating mindfulness amidst the serene forest landscape.

We will stay at a shukubo, a traditional temple lodging, where you’ll experience the tranquil life of monks. At the shukubo, we’ll enjoy shojin ryori, a delicious and balanced vegetarian Buddhist meal that nourishes both body and soul, offering a glimpse into the spiritual practices of Japanese temple life.

Next, we climb Mt. Gassan, representing the past. As the highest peak of Dewasanzan, this mountain is a place of introspection and reflection. Here, we will honor the ancestors and traditions that shaped the spiritual heritage of this land. The mountain’s ancient pathways and sacred shrines invite us to look back and reflect on the lessons and wisdom of those who walked these paths before us.

Our journey concludes at Mt. Yudono, the mountain of the future. Known as the most mysterious and sacred of the three peaks, Mt. Yudono is a place of transformation and renewal. In this spiritual sanctuary, participants will undergo a personal ritual of rebirth, symbolizing new beginnings and embracing future possibilities with an open heart.

Throughout the retreat, you will experience the depth and power of these sacred mountains, guided by a local expert deeply attuned to their spiritual significance. Each step on this journey offers an opportunity for self-discovery and growth, as you connect with Japan’s spiritual heritage and find clarity in your life’s path.

This retreat promises a profound experience, blending pilgrimage, nature, and reflection, allowing you to reconnect with your true self while embracing the timeless wisdom of Dewasanzan’s sacred peaks.

Day 4

Day 5

Day 6

Accommodation: Guesthouse

Day 4 begins with a wholesome breakfast at the shukubo, setting the stage for a deeply transformative journey. Our first stop is a visit to the sokushinbutsu, the self-mummified monks who symbolize extraordinary dedication and spiritual endurance. Here, we’ll reflect on the monks' path of self-sacrifice and profound spiritual commitment, drawing inspiration for our own journey of inner transformation.

Following this contemplative visit, we continue to the final and most sacred part of our retreat: the ascent up Mt. Yudono, the third and most revered of Dewasanzan’s peaks, symbolizing the future. Known for its mystery and spiritual power, Mt. Yudono represents renewal and rebirth, offering a space for embracing new beginnings and envisioning future possibilities.

As we climb through this sacred landscape, you’ll feel the ancient energy of the mountain guiding you to its venerated shrine, where we’ll participate in a special ritual symbolizing transformation. This sacred experience invites you to release past burdens and set fresh intentions for the future, opening your heart and mind to the possibilities that lie ahead.

After our time on Mt. Yudono, we make our way back down and return to our lodge in Miyagi. The evening offers a chance to rest, unwind, and reflect on the day’s powerful experiences. Enjoy a cozy, comforting dinner at the lodge, savoring the warmth and hospitality as you connect with fellow participants and prepare to carry the lessons and insights gained from Dewasanzan into life beyond the retreat.

Accommodation: Guesthouse

Day 5 begins with a group coaching session in the morning at our lodge, offering a space for reflection and integration. This session allows us to share insights, deepen our understanding of the spiritual journey we’ve experienced, and set intentions for the future, creating a supportive environment for personal growth and transformation.

After the session, we will head to Matsushima, one of Japan’s three most scenic views, renowned for its picturesque bay filled with over 200 pine-clad islands. The serene beauty of Matsushima has inspired poets and artists for centuries, making it a perfect setting for a tranquil afternoon.

For lunch, we’ll savor a traditional kaiseki ryori, a multi-course meal that showcases the artistry and seasonality of Japanese cuisine. Each dish is prepared with care, using fresh, local ingredients that celebrate the flavors of the region.

Following lunch, you’ll have free time to explore Matsushima’s charming streets, visit temples, or simply enjoy the breathtaking views of the bay. If you’d like, you can also sample the local street food offerings, which range from grilled seafood skewers to sweet treats.
