Our journey begins with a hands-on kintsugi workshop at our guesthouse, allowing you to learn the art of mending pottery with gold. We then explore a traditional kominka turned cozy coffee shop, experiencing local charm.

Next, we visit the esteemed temples of Chusonji and Motsuji, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, showcasing their rich history and architectural splendor. Wander through these sacred grounds, marvel at the national treasures, and immerse yourself in their tranquil beauty before engaging in a lacquer painting workshop at Ochiya, led by local artisans passionate about sharing their craft’s heritage.

In Matsushima, we savor a traditional kaiseki meal at a temple, enjoying the artfully prepared dishes that highlight seasonal ingredients and local culinary traditions. We’ll also visit a renowned pottery studio to experience the artistry and history behind Japanese ceramics.

We then explore the renowned Oigen ironware factory and the historic Shoboji Temple, absorbing the cultural and spiritual significance of these sites. Our journey continues in Matsushima with visits to Entsuji and Zuiganji temples—both national treasures—where we reflect on the timeless beauty and spirituality these iconic landmarks embody.

Day 1

Day 3

Arrive at Sendai Station, where the host will pick up the group at 15:00. Feel free to arrive earlier and explore the vibrant city of Sendai at your own pace before the pick-up time. Be sure to save some room for a hearty, authentic Japanese homemade welcome meal!

In the evening, we’ll gather for a welcome orientation and meet and greet, where you’ll have the opportunity to connect with fellow travelers—new faces who may soon become not only friends but perhaps even soulmates as we embark on this journey together.

This day, we will stay at our guesthouse and begin with a kintsugi workshop, where you’ll learn the ancient Japanese art of repairing pottery with gold, embracing the philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection.

We’ll visit a local kominka, a traditional Japanese farmhouse transformed into a charming coffee shop in the afternoon for some coffee.

The afternoon offers time to relax and take in the serene surroundings of the guesthouse.

Dinner will be a hearty, homemade meal, featuring seasonal and local flavors, paired with the warmth of omotenashi, Japan’s spirit of hospitality.

This day is designed for you to unwind and start building meaningful connections with others, laying the foundation for an enriching experience in the days ahead as we explore Japan’s traditions and landscapes together.

On day 3, we will visit Chusonji and Motsuji, two of Japan’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, known for their stunning temple architecture and tranquil gardens.

As we explore these sacred grounds, you’ll have time to reflect on their deep spiritual and cultural significance.

In the afternoon, we’ll head to Ochiya for a lacquer painting workshop. The area is nationally renowned for its urushi nuri, the traditional art of Japanese lacquerware. This craft involves applying multiple layers of tree sap lacquer to create beautiful, durable designs that have been perfected over centuries. A local artisan will guide you through the process, sharing the history and techniques behind this art form.

The day offers a deep dive into the region’s artistic heritage, allowing you to connect with Japan’s culture and craftsmanship while reflecting on the beauty and skill involved in creating these timeless works.

On day 4, we’ll begin with a hands-on experience at a local pottery studio, where you’ll create your own pottery piece using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Guided by skilled artisans, this immersive workshop connects you with the rich heritage of Japanese ceramics.

In the afternoon, we’ll head to Matsushima, one of Japan's most scenic coastal areas, renowned for its picturesque bay dotted with pine-covered islands. Here, you’ll savor a traditional kaiseki ryori at a temple, featuring a multi-course menu of seasonal and local ingredients, crafted with artistry and precision. The tranquil temple setting allows you to fully appreciate the flavors while soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of Matsushima.

This day offers a deep engagement with Japanese cultural traditions, blending hands-on artistry and culinary excellence against the backdrop of one of Japan’s most iconic landscapes.

On day 5, we’ll begin the day with a visit to Shoboji Temple, a peaceful and historic site that offers a serene atmosphere for reflection. As you explore the temple grounds, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with the spiritual heritage of the region and contemplate its significance in Japanese culture.

In the afternoon, we’ll head to the renowned Oigen Ironware Factory, where you’ll observe skilled artisans as they create high-quality cast ironware using techniques passed down through generations. You’ll learn about the history and craftsmanship that make Oigen’s products an iconic symbol of Japanese quality and tradition.

This day offers a balance of spirituality and craftsmanship, allowing you to engage with the rich cultural and artisanal heritage of the area while reflecting on the beauty and dedication present in these enduring traditions.

On day 6, we will explore the scenic beauty of Matsushima, one of Japan's most iconic landscapes, known for its picturesque bay dotted with pine-clad islands. Our journey begins with a visit to Entsuji Temple, where you’ll experience the tranquility of this historic site and its serene surroundings.

Next, we’ll visit Zuiganji Temple, a national treasure renowned for its beautiful Zen architecture and exquisite gardens. You’ll have time to explore the temple grounds and appreciate the artistry and spiritual significance that make it one of Matsushima’s most cherished sites.

In the evening, we’ll gather for a farewell dinner, celebrating the journey we’ve shared and reflecting on the insights and connections made throughout the retreat. This final evening offers a warm and memorable conclusion, embracing the spirit of Japanese hospitality and the peaceful beauty of Matsushima.

Day 7

After breakfast, a car will take you to Sendai Station or Sendai Airport for your departure.

The fee for this trip is $3730 per person,

Our guesthouse offers a serene retreat in the heart of Japan’s countryside, blending accessibility with the tranquil charm of rural life. Located within easy reach of transport options, it features traditional Japanese tatami rooms, allowing for a truly immersive experience. A beautifully maintained garden just outside creates a peaceful setting, ideal for unwinding and reflection. Friendly local neighbors add an authentic touch, enriching your stay with a sense of community. Full details about the guesthouse location and amenities will be provided upon registration.

An important note about the beds at our guesthouse

Here, you will sleep on traditional Japanese floor futons in tatami mat rooms (not a western-style mattress). Each room is designed with classic Japanese aesthetics, offering a calming retreat where you can fully immerse yourself in the local atmosphere. You’ll also experience warm omotenashi - the Japanese spirit of hospitality - ensuring you feel genuinely cared for throughout your stay.

If an opening is available and the retreat date is less than three months away, the full trip fee of $3,730 will be due as a one-time payment upon booking.
