Accommodation: Guesthouse
Arrive at Sendai Station, where the host will pick up the group at 15:00. Feel free to arrive earlier and explore the vibrant city of Sendai at your own pace before the pick-up time. Be sure to save some room for a hearty, authentic Japanese homemade welcome meal!
In the evening, we’ll gather for a welcome orientation and meet and greet, where you’ll have the opportunity to connect with fellow travelers—new faces who may soon become not only friends but perhaps even soulmates as we embark on this journey together.
Accommodation: Ginzan Onsen
This day, we will drive to Ginzan Onsen, where you’ll explore the nostalgic town, enjoy local snacks, and have a light lunch. After checking in, you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Dinner will feature a traditional kaiseki ryori (a multi-course meal showcasing seasonal ingredients and artistic presentation) alongside the genuine warmth of omotenashi, Japan’s spirit of hospitality.
This experience offers a deep sense of peace and a taste of authentic Japanese culture. Later, enjoy the charming gas-lamp light-up as the town glows under the evening sky.
Accommodation: Temple Lodge
In the morning, we will spend time forest bathing by the river before enjoying a traditional Japanese breakfast. We will then head to Mount Yudono, one of the three sacred mountains of Dewa Sanzan, symbolizing spiritual rebirth. We’ll embark on a gentle hike up this sacred mountain, where participants can reflect on the connection between nature and spirituality before we visit the self-mummified monk (sokushinbutsu), a profound symbol of dedication and mindfulness.
Tonight, we will stay at a temple lodge. In contrast to the comforts of the previous evening, this simple and traditional accommodation offers an authentic experience of Japanese temple life. While it may not be luxurious, the hospitality remains warm and genuine, providing an opportunity for participants to appreciate the beauty in simplicity and contemplate the essence of true comfort. This day invites participants to embrace tranquility, deepen their understanding of Japanese spirituality, and reflect on the power of simplicity and dedication.
Accommodation: Temple Lodge
This day we’ll hike up Mount Haguro, the mountain symbolizing the present, passing through ancient cedar forests dotted with shrines, each carrying its own significance.
Along the way, you’ll see the
Gojunoto, a five-story pagoda and national treasure, known for its stunning architectural design and harmony with the surrounding forest. It symbolizes the elements—earth, water, fire, wind, and sky—offering a space for reflection on the interconnectedness of nature and life. After the hike, we’ll have quiet time for reflection and journaling at the temple, where we will stay for a second night. In the evening, if weather permits, we’ll hold a meditation session under the stars, allowing you to connect deeply with the tranquility and spiritual energy of Mount Haguro.
Accommodation: Guesthouse
On this day, we visit Matsushima, one of Japan's Three Most Scenic Spots, known for its breathtaking bay dotted with pine-covered islands. At the temple of Entsu-ji we’ll participate in a juzu (Buddhist prayer beads) workshop led by the resident monk, who will guide us through the process of crafting the juzu and explain the significance of each stone used.
Afterward, you’ll have free time to explore Matsushima further. You can visit Zuigan-ji, a historic Zen temple famous for its beautiful gardens and stunning interiors, or take a scenic boat ride through Matsushima Bay to experience its iconic islands up close. Other activities include strolling along the shore, visiting the local tea house for a matcha experience, or exploring the quaint shops around the bay.
We’ll gather again at the hotel for our final dinner, a time to reflect on our insights and share our experiences in a joyful and memorable setting.
After breakfast, a car will take you to Sendai Station or Sendai Airport for your departure.
If you’d like to extend your stay and explore the area further, additional accommodations can be arranged at an extra cost. Please feel free to discuss this with the host when making your booking. We’re also happy to assist with any additional planning or bookings you may need and provide a list of recommended places to visit!
